Lafayette was founded in 1888 my Mary E. Miller. She and her husband, Lafayette Miller, had moved to the area to farm the land in the early 1870’s. In 1888, Mary designated 37 acres for the actual town and named it after her late husband. Lafayette quickly became an important part of the coal-mining boom that was happening in the area. The city of 34,000 residents is located just 10 minutes east of Boulder and includes over 1600 acres of open space, 20 miles of trails and 20 parks. Indian Peaks Golf Course, designed by Hall of Fame golfer, Hale Erwin, is found in the city. Other popular recreational choices include the Bob Burger Recreation Center, Lafayette Skate Park, Great Outdoors Water Park, the only water park in Boulder County, and Waneka Lake Park. This lake park includes a man-make reservoir, fishing area, 147 acres of playground structures, picnic tables and shelters and a 1.2-mile fitness trail. In 2019, Lafayette was named the first “Bird City” by the Environment for the Americas for its efforts on conservation, education and preservation of the local birds and their habitats. Lafayette provides its residents with impressive mountain views and a small-town atmosphere full of fun community events and wonderful local dining and shopping destinations. Old Town Lafayette provides condensed, unique shopping, dining and entertainment location filled with galleries, museums, theaters, historic homes, restaurants, and locally owned businesses. The city is in the award-winning Boulder Valley School District. Homes values are appreciating but are far more affordable than those in nearby Boulder.
